Master the Alphabet: 3 Engaging Tips for Teaching Letters

May 20, 2025

By Aja McNair

Hey there, educators and parents! It's your favorite educational consultant, Aja, bringing you some real-deal teaching tips for those energetic preschoolers and kindergartners. If you've found yourself exhausted trying to teach letters, take comfort in knowing you're not alone. Today, I'm sharing secrets that will help you teach letters and sounds without the stress or the need to retreat to the supply closet for a sanity snack break.

Engagement is Key

Trying to engage young ones with the alphabet can sometimes feel like corralling a herd of caffeinated kittens. You start with the letter B, and before you know it, you're breakdancing throughout the lesson. How does that happen, right? The trick is to make learning fun, hands-on, and rhythm-filled so that letters stick like peanut butter to jelly.

Three Tips for Sanity and Success

1. Keep It Moving

Think of teaching letters as a math equation: Letters + Movement = Memory Magic. When kids use their bodies, they not only learn the letter names but also the sounds and formations. Turn lessons into a movement game: stomp for S, bounce for B, zigzag for Z.

2. Hands-On Learning

Encourage activities that allow children to use their hands. Have them cut, color, match, and build. Incorporate games with Play-Doh, puzzles, scavenger hunts, or even materials like sand or rice. Active hands lead to focused minds.

3. Talk it Out Loud and Proud

Make letter sounds loud and rhythmic. Don’t just say “D says duh”; drum out the sound, add a beat, include songs or silly voices. Make it an experience. “D makes the sound duh,” becomes a catchy chant and soon, you’ll be the rock star teacher.
