🎲 Game #1: Paper Cup Word Builder

This is one of the most powerful phonics games you can use—and it costs almost nothing.

What You Need:

• Paper cups

• Marker

How to Play:

Write letters on the rims of the cups:

• One cup = vowel (a, e, i, o, u)

• Other cups = consonants

Stack them to build a word like:
👉 C-A-T

Have your child:

1. Say each sound: /c/ /a/ /t/

2. Blend the sounds: cat

Now rotate the beginning sound:
👉 bat, mat, sat

Why This Works:

Your child is learning phoneme manipulation—a critical reading skill.

They begin to understand:
👉 Words are made of sounds
👉 Changing one sound changes the word

💡 Pro Tip:
Start with simple CVC words (cat, dog, sun). Keep it simple to build confidence.

🎡 Game #2: Spin & Spell Word Families

This one feels like a toy—which is exactly why kids love it.

What You Need:

• Paper towel roll

• Paper strip

• Tape

How to Play:

1. Write a word ending (like -og) on the roll

2. Wrap a strip with beginning sounds (d, l, f)

3. Spin to create words:
   👉 dog, log, fog

Why This Works:

Instead of decoding from scratch every time, your child:
✔ Recognizes patterns
✔ Builds fluency faster
✔ Gains confidence

💡 Make It Fun:
Play “Real or Silly Word”
👉 “Zog”… real or silly? 😂

🍃 Game #3: Leaf Sound Hunt

If your child has a lot of energy—this is your game.

What You Need:

• Leaves (or paper cutouts)

• Marker

How to Play:

1. Write one letter on each leaf

2. Hide them around your home or yard

3. Your child finds a leaf and must say the SOUND (not name!)

👉 “/p/ /p/ /p/!”

Take It Further:

After collecting leaves, build words together:
👉 T + A + P = tap

Why This Works:

This combines:
✔ Movement (gross motor skills)
✔ Sound recognition
✔ Memory through action

This is called embodied learning—and it’s powerful.
