Is your child guessing at words, mistaking letters like 'b' and 'd,' or becoming frustrated during reading time? You're not alone, and there's a straightforward solution that doesn't require a teaching degree. This free 10-minute phonics test is designed to identify the missing skills in your child's reading toolkit and guide you on what to teach first.
Welcome to Everything Aja
Hey there, it's Aja. Welcome to Everything Aja, where we empower Christian homeschool moms like you to teach reading without sacrificing your peace or faith. If you're new here, know that you're in good company. I've spoken with countless mothers who, despite trying everything from YouTube tutorials to Pinterest activities, find their children struggling with reading.
Understanding the Struggle
The good news is, the struggle isn't your fault. It stems from one critical piece of missing information. Struggling readers are not lazy, nor are they necessarily behind or dealing with a learning disability. Often, they simply lack specific phonic skills that no one has pinpointed for you before.
Common Missteps in Teaching Reading
As caregivers, we might begin by teaching letter names before letter sounds, or we push our children to read books before they've mastered blending simple words. It's like building a house's second story without a completed foundation. The problem is invisible when watching kids read—they've become adept at guessing through picture cues or pattern memorization, but guessing doesn’t equate to reading.
My Journey and Solution
As a reading specialist with over 15 years of experience, even I had difficulty pinpointing where my child was stagnating. After weeks of teaching the wrong things, I developed the "Phonic to Phrase" assessment—a free, 10-minute test that accurately identifies which of the three phonics phases your child is traversing.
The Phonics Phases
Let's quickly outline these foundational phases:
- Phase One: Letter Sounds
- Children learn letters represent sounds, not just names. Mastery typically occurs between ages four and six, but if older children are guessing, they might have gaps here.
- Phase Two: Blending CVC Words
- This phase involves sounding out consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words like 'cat' or 'dog' and tackling digraphs and blends like 'ship' or 'frog.' Many readers, including those in third or fourth grade, stumble here.
- Phase Three: Long Vowels and Vowel Teams
- Here, children grasp words with long vowels or silent E, like 'cake' or 'bike,' as well as vowel teams like 'boat' or 'rain.' This phase sets the stage for fluent reading. Most parents inadvertently skip between these phases without structure, resulting in prolonged struggle. The assessment provides a clear starting point to prevent such confusion.
Inside the Phonic to Phrase Assessment
The assessment comprises two key parts: your child's assessment and your scoring sheet. Your child will read letters and sounds, as well as CVC words and more complex structures. Your role is to track incorrect responses on the scoring sheet, which guides when to cease the test, indicating your child’s current phase.
Take the First Step
Now that you understand the Phonic to Phrase assessment, dedicate 10 minutes to uncover where your child struggles and what the next teaching steps should be. With this roadmap, you’ll gain clarity and direction to help your child progress confidently in their reading journey.
This quick phonics check looks at key early reading skills including:
