The Best Christmas Gift for a Christian Homeschool Mom Isn't a Toy 🎄

Oct 15, 2026

by Aja McNair

Forget the coffee mugs, slippers, and another planner! This Christmas, give yourself something that could transform your homeschool experience.

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year! There is something so special about the decorations, family traditions, Christmas music, and the excitement of watching our children's faces light up as they open their gifts.

But Mama, can we talk about something for a moment?

What's on YOUR Christmas list this year?

As moms, we spend so much time thinking about everyone else. We're shopping for our children, planning Christmas activities, preparing meals, and making sure everyone has a memorable holiday season.

And if you're a Christian homeschool mom, you're probably doing all of that while still trying to keep your homeschool running smoothly!

But when someone asks what you want for Christmas, what do you say?

Maybe a new coffee mug? A cozy blanket? Another planner that promises to help you get your entire life together?

Now, don't get me wrong. I love a good planner!

But this year, I want to challenge you to think a little differently.

What if the best Christmas gift you could receive isn't something you can unwrap, but something that makes your everyday life as a homeschool mom easier?

Homeschooling Is a Calling, but That Doesn't Mean It's Always Easy

As Christian parents, we understand that educating our children involves so much more than academics.

We're not simply teaching our children how to read, write, and solve math problems. We're helping establish a foundation for their future, nurturing their character, and creating opportunities to incorporate God's Word into their everyday lives.

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 reminds us of the importance of diligently teaching God's commandments to our children throughout our daily routines.

What a beautiful responsibility!

But let's be realistic.

Just because God has placed something on your heart doesn't mean you automatically know how to do every part of it.

Maybe you started homeschooling with excitement and a Pinterest board full of ideas.

You imagined peaceful mornings, engaging lessons, and children who couldn't wait to learn.

Then reality happened.

Your child doesn't understand the phonics lesson.

You've explained the same concept five different ways.

The curriculum you purchased isn't working the way you expected.

And now you're wondering whether you're doing enough.

Sound familiar?

Mama, you can love homeschooling and still need help with homeschooling.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

The Problem With Buying More Homeschool Stuff

Let me ask you a question.

How many homeschool resources have you purchased because you thought they would finally solve your problem?

Another workbook.

Another reading program.

Another set of flashcards.

Another educational toy.

Another curriculum bundle.

And yet, somehow, you're still feeling overwhelmed.

Here's something I've learned through my experience in education:

More resources don't automatically produce better results.

Sometimes, what you need isn't another product. It's a better understanding of how to use the resources you already have, how your child learns, and what to teach next.

For example, if your child is struggling to read, purchasing another phonics workbook may not address the actual problem.

Perhaps your child hasn't mastered letter-sound relationships.

Maybe they need additional phonemic awareness instruction.

Or perhaps they're ready to begin blending sounds, but the lessons you're using aren't providing enough guided practice.

Without understanding where your child is developmentally, it's easy to keep purchasing materials without making meaningful progress.

And that's frustrating for both you and your child.

So, What Should a Christian Homeschool Mom Ask for This Christmas?

I'm going to suggest something that might not be on your traditional Christmas list.

Ask for an investment in your ability to teach your child.

Not just another resource to add to your homeschool shelf.

I'm talking about practical instruction, personalized support, and tools that help you become a more confident and effective homeschool teacher.

Imagine starting your homeschool day knowing:

  • Exactly what reading skills your child needs to work on.

  • How to teach those skills in a way your child understands.

  • Which activities will reinforce learning without creating unnecessary busywork.

  • How to recognize when your child has mastered a skill.

  • What to do when your child struggles instead of making progress.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful gift?

Because the goal isn't simply to have a beautifully organized homeschool room or shelves full of educational materials.

The goal is to help your child actually learn.

And when you have the knowledge and support to teach effectively, you're investing in something that can benefit your family far beyond Christmas morning.

The Gift That Keeps Giving: Confidence in Teaching Your Child to Read

Let's talk specifically about reading.

Reading is one of the most important foundational academic skills your child will develop.

It affects nearly every subject they'll encounter throughout their education.

But teaching a child to read can feel incredibly intimidating, especially if you've never received formal training in reading instruction.

You might find yourself asking:

Where do I start?

Should I teach letter names or sounds first?

Why can my child recognize letters but still struggle to read words?

How do I know when it's time to move to the next skill?

What should I do when my child keeps forgetting what we've already learned?

These are real questions, and they deserve practical answers.

That's one of the reasons I created Reading by Design.

I wanted parents and teachers to have access to a more intentional approach to reading instruction, one that helps them understand what their children need instead of constantly guessing.

My approach follows three important steps:

1. Assess: Understand what your child already knows and identify the skills that need additional instruction.

2. Act: Provide targeted instruction and meaningful activities that address those specific needs.

3. Automate: Establish consistent systems and routines that make reading instruction easier to manage.

Because teaching reading shouldn't feel like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks!

You need a plan.

And more importantly, you need a plan that makes sense for YOUR child.

Investing in Yourself Is Also Investing in Your Children

I want to encourage you to look at professional development, educational coaching, and instructional support differently.

We often think of those things as something reserved for classroom teachers.

But homeschool moms are teachers too!

And just like teachers in traditional schools, you deserve opportunities to grow in your knowledge and strengthen your instructional skills.

Think about it.

When you learn how to identify reading difficulties early, your child benefits.

When you understand how to teach phonics systematically, your child benefits.

When you develop confidence in your ability to plan and deliver effective lessons, your entire homeschool experience can benefit.

Investing in your development as a homeschool mom is not selfish. It's an investment in the children God has entrusted to your care.

Proverbs 4:7 reminds us of the value of wisdom and understanding.

And sometimes, pursuing that understanding means recognizing that we need additional guidance.

There's no shame in seeking support.

In fact, asking for help can be one of the wisest decisions you make.

What If This Christmas Looked Different?

Imagine waking up in January without that familiar feeling of dread about getting back into your homeschool routine.

Instead of wondering whether your curriculum is working, you have a clearer understanding of your child's needs.

Instead of spending hours searching online for another reading activity, you have a plan for what to teach.

Instead of feeling discouraged every time your child struggles, you have strategies to help them move forward.

Will every homeschool day suddenly become perfect?

Absolutely not!

There will still be interruptions, challenging lessons, and days when nothing seems to go according to plan.

But having the right support can make those moments easier to navigate.

And isn't that something worth asking for?

Mama, Put This on Your Christmas List!

So here's my challenge for you.

When someone asks what you want for Christmas this year, don't automatically say, "Oh, I don't need anything."

Think about what would genuinely help you grow.

Maybe it's a homeschool coaching experience.

Maybe it's a structured reading program that helps you teach with greater confidence.

Maybe it's professional development, instructional resources, or personalized guidance from someone who understands the challenges you're facing.

Whatever it is, give yourself permission to ask for something that supports the important work you're doing.

And if your biggest challenge right now is teaching your child to read, I would love to help you take that first step.
